Haters Gonna Hate…

24 May

Haters have always had the need to hate; to diminish, disrespect and discriminate against others who they feel are somehow less than them.

They base their hatred on many things, things that can change over time based on who they believe are the ones somehow threatening their entitlement and are most easily oppressed; typically minorities.

They may hate because of skin color, religion, ethnicity, gender, sexual identity, social class or simple envy and greed, however their reasoning typically has no actual basis in reality.

Psychologist will say these haters have self esteem issues and basically have a need to believe they are superior to others in some way.

We’ve seen these haters throughout history, it’s definitely something built into the mental condition of some human beings. In the Americas, haters came along with the European ships that brought the first immigrants to these shores.

The Spanish, the Portuguese, the English; they all came with a history of hate. Civilizations were destroyed, indigenous people and their culture were displaced and replaced by the “white man’s” society and religion. Slavery was not just tolerated, but accepted as a right. The natives were seen as less civilized, ignorant and only useful as tools for the betterment of the white conquerors.

This type of thinking didn’t end as “modern civilization” came about across the Americas. Slavery built the United States, and as more immigration came about, discrimination and hatred soon followed; and it wasn’t simply based on skin color. The haters hated minorities they saw as threats to their established social status: Blacks, Italians, Irish, Asians, Hispanics, Jews, Catholics, Muslims, gays and even women.

As these minorities grew in size and political strength, the haters needed new groups to hate. They needed smaller, less powerful groups to rally their hate filled supporters; and who better than transgender people and drag queens.

Surely they could hate and discriminate against these types without much pushback from mainstream Americans; and so far it seems they may be correct.

States after states have passed or are proposing laws that specifically target these two groups of Americans. Targeting them not because they are doing anything wrong, but simply because they exist and are different.

After all, Haters need to Hate, and I hate that about them.
